When In Rome

Rome, I am in love with you! Well, I’m in love with just Italy in general, and am already planning to go back next year for my 30th birthday. I had been to Rome years ago (like 7 years ago), and it was soo nice to be back. While I absolutely love going to new places, there’s something nice about returning somewhere you’ve been, even if just once. This time I was in Rome for 3 days (more or less), with one of my girl friends from Toronto. One of the main reasons we went was for our friends wedding, and I was SO happy we did.

If you haven’t been to Rome, I definitely think it’s a place to add to your travel wish list. Generally I use big cities like Rome as a starting or ending point to fly into/out of, so it’s perfect if you’re thinking of traveling around Italy. Rome is a very busy city, and there is so much to do. It’s also a walking city, so you’ll be sure to get your steps in. We landed around 11 am the first morning, and pretty much went straight out to explore. We were both slightly groggy, but a few cappucinos later we were good to go.

I would suggest making a rough itinerary for yourself because there really is so much to see and do that it can be slightly overwhelming if you don’t know what you want to get checked off your list. You can easily walk the city center and stumble across some big tourist sites, but there are some main spots you want to see that are not central or walk able. If you’re looking for Napolatean style pizza, then Rome is not the place… I quickly (& sadly) learned that. What they are known for however is their carbonara pasta. Make sure you try it at a few places, it was amazing alongside the caprese salads. So YUMM. We also drank our fair share of wine because when it’s the same price as water, why not!

Again, the main reason we booked our Europe trip was for our girlfriends wedding. Let me say, it was INCREDIBLE! By far the most beautiful wedding I have been to. It was about an hour outside of Rome, at Castello Di Bracciano (Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes got married there). Everything felt like it was out of a fairy tale, and it was so magical to be there to celebrate with the couple!

Below are some tips on what to see and where to eat!

Getting there: we took a direct overnight flight from Toronto to Rome. There are multiple taxis that are great to take from the airport to your hotel/b&b. Rome is such a hub, so it’s an airport that accommodates many flights into and out of it. You can also fly into other areas of Italy and take a train to Rome.

Where to stay: we stayed at the Bed & Breakfast Julius Caesar, and it was perfect for us. It is located pretty centrally and was very easy to walk into the city centre from it, but also had multiple metro stops nearby as well. The hosts were very friendly and helpful, and the complimentary breakfast was more than we had expected.

Transportation: you can walk most places depending on where you are staying. Otherwise they have a metro/bus options that can get you pretty much anywhere in Rome.

What to do: you can easily fill up the days in Rome. There is a ton of amazing history there so you definitely want to try to check out everything.

  • Colloseum
  • Pantheon
  • Spanish Steps
  • Trevi Fountain – go early if you can, it can become such a zoo
  • The Vatican
  • Piazza Navona
  • Trastavere
  • Villa Borghese
  • Campo De’Fiori

Where to eat and drink: it’s pretty easy to find good food, however because there are so many ‘tourist’ areas, you do have to search a bit to avoid those sorts of eateries. A few to mention from this trip and my past trip are:

  • La Carbona – this is a *must*, and be sure to book a reso. Really cool, old school Italian spot. The carbonara pasta is incredible.
  • Cul De Sac – great spot for charcuterie, pasta and wine
  • Hotel Raphael – rooftop patio with a great view and aperol spritz
  • Dar Poetta
  • Pizzaria Baffetto
  • Maccheroni
  • San Crispino – gelato

Don’t miss my posts next on Saint Tropez and Paris!
